Who Knew???

Seriously, who EVER would have guessed that becoming a Mom would make me desperately wish that I had stock in either duct tape, or straight jackets.

You see, diaper changes used to be so simple. Chunky Monkey had NO desire to flop his huge body over, and refused to roll over. He just laid there, and cooed or smiled happily. I could leave him on the changing pad on the Pack n Play while I grabbed a diaper, and he went nowhere. Yeah, I know. Don't leave your kid unattended. The child wouldn't even roll on his side, forget rolling UP the side of the PNP changing table, to fall off. It's not a flat surface, he sort of hangs down inside. Whatever, he's my kid. If you don't like it, you can lump it.

Then, Chunky Monkey learned to move. And move he does. He wiggles, he squirms, he flips over. He also is QUITE fond of putting his hands down into the poopy area I am trying to hurriedly clean. Seriously, he's like an excited little puppy who just had a gallon of Red Bull, and can NOT hold still. To complicate matters, since he has mastered taking off the diapers that velcro, I prefer to use snaps, but they take longer. All my soft, squishy and cuddly fitted diapers with adorable covers are laying abandoned, gathering dust. If I try to put on a diaper and then a cover, it is like battling with an octopus that has a weapon in each tentacle. It's a losing battle.

I've tried the distraction tactic, by handing him a toy/nasal aspirator/anything to possibly distract him. Yeah, he can play with whatever he's holding in one hand, grab a handful of poop with the other, and flip over all at once. Delightful. Craptastic, even.

That is what has led me to the duct tape conclusion. Or straight jacket. I can not fathom any other way. I will just have to tape his little arms down, do the diaper change, and set him free. You can't ever say that I'm not a problem solver.

This is so true. I am going through the exact same thing with my 9 month old...especially the poop grabbing!

Just wait until he starts seriously PROTESTING getting changed. Holding down an 18 month old, covered in all kinds of nasty and not wanting to let you wipe! Uugghhh!

Have you tried giving him a cracker or other snack to chew on? That always worked with mine. My 7 month old is just starting to get squirmy, I'm hoping that works for him too. Good luck!

Amen. I actually wondered the other day if it is possible to potty train a 9 month old!

You are lucky you got this far with ease! Eliza rolled over for the first time at 6 weeks and we were never able to change her on anything but the floor. I am just now able to get her to lay still enough for snap diapers at 21 months. I usually just gave up and let her go naked.

Is he rolling around in his own poo yet?

UGH! The rolling, squirming, etc is the reason all of EJ's diapers have velcro! I only buy snaps in small sizes!

I can relate - SOOOOOOO frustrating! When we're both at home, sometimes diaper changes turn into a 2-parent job.

Those boys!! It's like the best toy in the world, right? My DD really didn't have this problem so I'm new at it too.
I've found that if I have him in a onesie I can unsnap it and pull it up kinda inside out and trap his arms in there. Of course my DS is a tiny bit younger at 7 months (today). That doesn't keep him from rolling but at least the hands are at bay and I can lean an elbow into him if he tries to roll over on me. :)
Good luck finding a straight jacket!!!

Oh, boy. I understand. My 6 month old has just started doing this, and wowza. Those changes are a completely different experience than they were just a week ago. Fun times ahead.

Just found your blog, by the way, and I love it! Keep up the good work!
